Which Microsoft Fabric Certification Should You Prepare For?

TL;DR

Prepare for DP-700 if you will build and run Fabric pipelines. Prepare for DP-600 if you will prepare data and own semantic models or governed analytics assets. Use Microsoft Learn and the 60-day Fabric trial for official practice, then publish one role-specific project with decisions, security, and run evidence before booking the exam.

Prepare for DP-700 if you will build and run Fabric data pipelines. Prepare for DP-600 if you will prepare data and own semantic models, lakehouses, or warehouses.

Microsoft currently lists two Fabric-specific certifications: DP-600 and DP-700. PL-300 is the useful adjacent option for Power BI analysts, but it is not one of those two Fabric credentials.

Choose the Certification That Matches Your Work

Pick the certification that matches the work you want to describe in an interview. A credential should name the work you can demonstrate, not only the technology you have studied.

Prepare ForWork You Want To OwnBuild Before Booking
DP-700Pipelines, transformations, monitoring, securityIngested lakehouse with run logs
DP-600Semantic models, governed analytics assetsModel, DAX measures, role access
PL-300Power BI reports and data modelsPower BI model and report

Choose DP-700 when the job involves moving data reliably. Microsoft defines the role around data-loading patterns, data architecture, orchestration, security, monitoring, and optimization.

Choose DP-600 when the job involves making prepared data useful and trusted. Microsoft defines the role around analytical assets, data preparation, governance, and semantic models.

Choose PL-300 first when you mainly turn data into reports and self-service insight. It builds useful Power Query and DAX foundations for later Fabric work.

A lakehouse combines flexible data-lake storage with warehouse-style analytics. Learn when each storage choice fits in our guide to lakehouse versus warehouse decisions.

Turn Exam Objectives into Practice

Passing a practice test is not enough preparation for production work. Build one small Fabric solution that forces you to make the same decisions the certification tests.

Build This If You Are Preparing for DP-700

Start with a source you can explain, such as a public CSV file or a simple database export. Create a Fabric workspace and record who needs access.

Then complete this sequence:

  1. Ingest the source into a Fabric lakehouse or warehouse.
  2. Transform the data with SQL, PySpark, or KQL.
  3. Run the flow through a pipeline, dataflow, or notebook.
  4. Capture a failed or changed run, then explain how you diagnosed it.
  5. Record the workspace permissions, data access choice, and monitoring evidence.
  6. Write a README that explains the architecture and how another person can rerun it.

That build maps to DP-700’s three assessed areas: implementing and managing an analytics solution, ingesting and transforming data, and monitoring and optimizing the solution. Microsoft’s DP-700 study guide also names SQL, PySpark, and KQL as useful skills.

Build This If You Are Preparing for DP-600

Use a prepared dataset from a lakehouse or warehouse. Create a semantic model, which is the tables, relationships, and calculations that make data usable in reports.

Then complete this sequence:

  1. Document the business question your model answers.
  2. Prepare and enrich the source data.
  3. Create relationships and business measures with DAX.
  4. Apply at least one access or governance choice.
  5. Show how the model reaches a report or consumer.
  6. Save a diagram and README that explain your modelling decisions.

That build maps to DP-600’s work on data preparation, analytics lifecycle management, security, governance, and semantic models.

Fabric project evidence from source to governed analytical output

Use Microsoft Fabric Free Before You Pay for Training

Microsoft offers a 60-day Fabric trial for hands-on exploration. The trial supports Fabric workloads including Data Factory, Data Engineering, Real-Time Analytics, and Power BI.

Use the trial for the project above. Start the trial from the Fabric account manager, create a workspace, and work through the part of the platform that matches your chosen certification.

Microsoft Learn also provides a free Fabric learning hub. Its beginner path covers lakehouses, warehouses, real-time intelligence, data science, SQL databases, and semantic models.

“Microsoft Fabric free” does not mean the certification exam is free. Microsoft displays a price of US$165 for each exam, with the final price based on the country or region where you take it.

Use the free trial to learn by doing. Use the paid exam only after you can explain the decisions in your build.

What Microsoft Fabric Training Should Cover

A useful Microsoft Fabric training programme should follow the certification’s job work. A list of Fabric tools is not enough.

For DP-700, look for labs on ingestion, transformation, orchestration, workspace configuration, security, monitoring, and optimization. Microsoft’s official DP-700 course is designed for data professionals with extraction, transformation, and loading experience. It also expects familiarity with SQL, PySpark, or KQL.

For DP-600, look for data preparation, dataflows or notebooks, warehouses and lakehouses, semantic models, security, governance, version control, and deployment. Microsoft’s official DP-600 course includes dimensional modelling, transformations, semantic-model optimization, lifecycle management, and governance.

Before enrolling, ask one question: “Which live exercise will let me show the objective I am paying to learn?” The answer should name a build, a feedback point, and an artefact you keep.

If you need more than videos, compare interactive Fabric exercises with industry projects. If a work schedule drives the choice, see which Microsoft Fabric training format fits.

Make Your Project Inspectable

A recruiter or hiring manager cannot inspect an exam score beyond the credential. They can inspect how you made a technical decision.

Your project folder should contain:

  • A one-paragraph business problem.
  • A source-data description and assumptions.
  • An architecture diagram.
  • Screenshots of the workspace and core assets.
  • Transformation logic or notebook excerpts.
  • A security or access decision.
  • A monitoring or quality-check result.
  • A short list of limitations and next improvements.
  • Instructions for rerunning the project.

DP-700 candidates should make the pipeline and its operating evidence easy to find. DP-600 candidates should make the model, measures, access choices, and stakeholder outcome easy to find.

Use our Azure Data Engineer portfolio playbook to turn those files into a case study that a reviewer can scan quickly.

Use This Microsoft Fabric Certification Readiness Checklist

Use this checklist before you schedule an exam.

  • [ ] I chose DP-700, DP-600, or PL-300 based on the work I want to own.
  • [ ] I completed the current official Microsoft Learn path for that certification.
  • [ ] I built a Fabric workspace with a documented access choice.
  • [ ] I ingested and transformed data in Fabric.
  • [ ] I produced the role-specific proof from the decision table.
  • [ ] I wrote a README, diagram, and rerun guide.
  • [ ] I used Microsoft’s practice assessment to identify weak objectives.
  • [ ] I corrected a weak area by changing my build.
  • [ ] I can explain my project in two minutes without reading notes.
  • [ ] I checked the live study guide before booking the exam.

That final check matters. Microsoft has scheduled English-language updates for both DP-600 and DP-700 on October 19, 2026. Use the DP-600 credential page or DP-700 credential page as the final exam-scope source.

At Vision Board, we teach Fabric inside our four-month Azure Data Engineering Batch 12, which includes workspace setup, lakehouse work, ingestion, Spark processing, warehousing, pipelines, streaming, and an end-to-end Fabric project. The programme includes live classes, recordings, assessments, interactive sessions, and scheduled doubt-clearing, so it suits professionals who want structured Fabric practice alongside broader Azure Data Engineering skills.

FAQs

What Score Do I Need to Pass DP-600 or DP-700?

You need a score of 700 or greater. Microsoft publishes that passing threshold in its exam scoring guidance.

Can I Use the Microsoft Fabric Trial for Production Work?

No. Microsoft says the Fabric trial is for evaluation and testing, not ongoing production, business-critical workloads, or long-term operations. Use paid Fabric capacity for production workloads.

What Happens to Fabric Notebooks and Pipelines When the Free Trial Ends?

Non-Power BI Fabric items become inactive unless their workspace moves to a paid capacity. Microsoft says the content remains stored in OneLake for seven days after expiry, so you can reactivate it by assigning supported capacity.

Does the Fabric Free Trial Include Copilot?

No. Microsoft lists Copilot and several AI experiences, including data agents and AI functions, among the features unavailable in trial capacity.

Do Microsoft Fabric Certifications Need Renewal?

Yes. Microsoft role-based certifications expire annually, and renewal uses a free online assessment through Microsoft Learn.
